With a 300 Kt speed and a 28,000 ft  max operating altitude, the four place pressurized Evolution is the epitome of the owner-built high performance aircraft concept that was pioneered by Lance Neibauer in 1986. The Lancair history of high performance, cutting edge construction techniques, and the adoption of the latest in avionics technology was never more apparent than in this exciting aircraft. Lancair’s core competency lies in carbon composite construction and aerodynamic efficiency, and when this is coupled with the power and reliability of the Pratt & Whitney PT-6 turboprop engine, what emerges is an aircraft that is simply unmatched in the certified world. But certification has its place, of course, and Lancair recognizes that. Therefore, whenever possible Lancair has observed and incorporated the engineering principles and requirements of certification to ensure a safe and airworthy aircraft for the owner-builder. Lancair uses the FAA’s Part 23, Utility Category as guidance in airframe design criteria for strength, redundancy, handling, safety and ergonomics whenever possible.

The Evolution is the first “digital kit”. By that we mean that the aircraft was designed using the premier design software, Solid Works, as well as extensive Finite Element Analysis, and aerodynamic modeling to produce a design that can be assembled by an owner builder with a minimum of man hours and virtually no customization. The use of this design process means that the tools and molds that are used to make the parts of the aircraft are created from the same digital files that define the design, resulting in precision fits and repeatability. Previous aircraft kits took thousands of man hours to complete and often were never finished. The Evolution can be completed in 1500 hours or less and it is likely that no kit will ever go unfinished and not flown. The Evolution is designed to be in the air in less than one year, and some have flown in as little as 6 months. The Evolution can be built by anyone who has basic mechanical, and tool skills. If you have ever built a hot rod, remodeled or helped to construct a structure, restored a boat, or helped your A&P do an annual, you can build an Evolution. Lancair gets you started by including two weeks of factory-supervised assistance in our facility. At the completion of these two weeks your airframe is structurally complete, sitting on the main gear, less firewall forward equipment. Many builders then employ the advice and assistance of professional mentors that can supply direction, tools, and workspace, and that also can do much of the work not required by the FAA to comply with the FAA Advisory Circular AC 20-27G that states that the owner builder complete 50.1% of the tasks required for Certification in the Experimental Category. Lancair chose the Pratt & Whitney PT6A-135A to be the primary engine for the Evolution because it provides 750 SHP in the most reliable package ever offered in a kit built aircraft. The PT-6 family boasts an incredible reliability record of one inflight failure per 1500 service years! Lancair offers new engines with the full support and factory warranty program from P&W as well as zero-time overhauled used engines from Airforce Turbine Service (ATS). With a recommended time before overhaul of 3600 hours and a service life of 8000 hours, it is unlikely that an Evolution owner would ever overhaul his engine even once.

For those that prefer a piston engine, Lancair offers the latest in piston aircraft engines, the Lycoming TEO-540 “iE2” electronically controlled 350 hp engine.This engine is a truly unique offering that incorporates dual engine management computers, electronic prop and boost controls, single lever operation, and an 1800 hr. The flight characteristics of the Evolution will make any pilot look good and feel at home regardless of his previous experience. In keeping with the FAR part 23 Certification guidelines, the Evolution has a 61 kt stall speed in landing configuration, with a recommended final approach speed of only 80 KTs. Stalls are benign with roll control throughout he mild buffet and break.

Even at the 4300 pound max gross weight, a PT6 powered Evolution will climb at 4000 fpm, reaching FL280 in 12 minutes. Flying in the flight levels is comfortable because the Evolution’s carbon fiber construction strength permits a cabin pressure differential of 6.5psi, which provides an 8000 ft. cabin altitude at FL280. Should a rapid descent be required, the Evolution can be configured with gear and flaps to descend at 3500 fpm at only 135 kts while maintaining comfortable cabin pressurization.
